Clostridium ialah satu genus bakterium gram-positif yang tergolong dalam Firmicutes. Ia merupakan anaerob obligat yang mampu menghasilkan endospora.[1][2] Sel-sel individu berbentuk basilus, yang memberinya nama-namanya, daripada kloster (κλωστήρ) atau gelendong dalam bahasa Yunani. Ciri-ciri ini secara tradisionalnya mentakrifkan genus ini; tetapi banyak spesies yang pada asalnya dikelaskan sebagai Clostridium telah dikelaskan semula dalam genus-genus lain.
