Maluma telah memetik penyanyi salsa Puerto Rico Hector Lavoe dan penghibur terkenal Amerika Syarikat Michael Jackson dan Justin Timberlake sebagai pengaruh utama muziknya .[2] Dia meletakkan muziknya  sebagai "pop bandar".[3][4]

Billboard editor menulis, "Maluma jenama reggaeton sync baik dengan gambar-nya, urusan untuk menjadi romantis dan mentah. Bunyi beliau merupakan evolusi genre." Dalam sebuah wawancara dalam 2016 dia menyatakan:

I grew up with this genre [reggaeton] that literally became life. It is one of the genres that I sing, because I am not a reggaetonero, I am an urban performer, I sing reggaeton. If you listen to my last album there are ballads, mambo, merengue and reggaeton and underground stuff. I like to show the versatility that I have to perform.[5]
