Berdasarkan tradisi Kristian, Matius mengkhabarkan Injil selama 15 tahun di kalangan masyarakat Yahudi di Yudea, dan kemudian berkeliling ke negara lain, termasuk Etiopia, Makedonia, parsi, dan Parthia.[16] Gereja Katolik Rom dan Gereja Ortodoks mempunyai tradisi bahawa Matius mati kematiran.[12][17]
